The International Olympic Committee chose Rio de Janeiro on Friday to host the 2016 Olympic Games.
Rio beat out Madrid, Spain, in the final round. Chicago, Illinois, and Tokyo, Japan, were eliminated in earlier rounds.
For Rio, the major appeal was bringing the Olympics to South America for the first time.
“It’s certainly the sentimental bid of the four,” said Stephen Samuelson, the head of online sports at the Sydney Morning Herald in Australia. Source CNN
